Presentation Guidelines

Guidelines for parallel session presenters [Updated 15 March 2019]
  • General timing:  20 minute presentation: The presenter would spend about 15 minutes for the main content of the presentation and 5 minutes for Question and Answer (Q&A) section.  Due to the tight schedule, the timing of each presentation session will be strictly enforced. Please do not run over your allocated time.
  • Font:  For PowerPoint presentations: Use a minimum of 24pt font for PowerPoint.
  • Literature Review: If your presentation is research-based, please keep your Literature Review section concise and reserve more time for Findings/Discussion/Q&A Section
  • First slide: On your first slide, include your session title, presenter name(s), affiliation and email address.
  • Consistency: Your session should closely follow your abstract.
  • Practicality: Something in your session must be practical. OpenTESOL hosts a diverse group of participants.
  • Equipment: The room will be equipped with a computer, a projector and a speaker. In case you bring your own laptop, please bear in mind that unexpected connection faults might occur. Bring our own HDMI-VGA/Macbook cable.
Guidelines for poster presenters [Updated 20 May, 2019]
A poster presentation is a visually explanatory exhibit that allows for short, informal discussions between the presenter(s) and the participants as they circulate within the poster-session rooms. Poster sessions serve as an important and interactive forum for sharing professional ideas and for receiving feedback. The presenters are expected to be very flexible with the presentation format and their participants within their allowance of 30  minutes per session. Below are some basic guidelines to help you prepare your poster for the OpenTESOL Conference:
  • You will bring the poster to the venue and we will help you to stick it to the wall so we advise not making them too big or too heavy. The recommended size is A0
  • They layout should be portrait.
  • Try to avoid using too much text. Remember people will have to read the poster while walking round, so consider whether it is easy to read (think about minimum font size 16-18 and an easy to read font). Aim for clean, attractive and readable layout.
  • Ideally, try to include visuals and consider how self-explanatory they are.
  • Think about the sequence of your poster and how someone will approach reading it and in which order. Sections help break up a poster into manageable chunks.
  • Remember that your poster should address a concern that is also of relevance and interest to your audience and reflects the content of your abstract. Please keep this in mind when planning and designing the content of your poster. Consider – what is my main message or concern? Ask someone whether they can establish this from reading your poster. Indeed, it is generally good advice to get feedback from others about your poster.
  • Be sure the poster includes your title, name and if you wish to connect with others, contact details!
  • You will also be asked to BRIEFLY introduce your poster. Think how you can get your main message across in around 60 seconds max! Keep it simple!
